How to Install a Baseball Bat Grip – Easy Step-by-Step Guide

Installing a new baseball bat grip is a fun and easy way to improve your swing, reduce bat sting, and make your bat look awesome! Whether you're replacing an old grip or customizing your bat, this guide will show you how to wrap a bat grip!

These instructions work for all size metal and wood baseball and softball bats including youth, little league, high school, college, adult leagues, or professional.

Why Replace a Baseball/Softball Bat Grip?

Over time, bat grips wear out and lose their stickiness and cushion. A fresh grip helps you:

✅ Get a better grip on your bat
Reduce vibration (less sting when you hit the ball)
✅ Customize your bat with cool colors & styles

And the best part? You can do it yourself! Let’s get started.

What You Need to Install a Bat Grip

  • Your new Ballpark Elite bat grip
  • A clean bat handle (wipe it down if dirty)
  • Ballpark Elite finishing tape (This is the black branded tape wrapped around the grip when you open it. DO NOT THROW THIS AWAY!)
  • Scissors

Step-by-Step Guide to Wrapping Your Bat Grip

Step 1: Remove the Old Grip

If your bat has an old grip, carefully peel it off starting from the top. If there’s sticky stuff left behind, don’t worry! Just rub it off with your hands or a towel.

Step 2: Get Your New Grip Ready

Open the package and put the black finishing tape to the side. Do not throw this away, you will use this later.
✅ Unroll the new grip and find the thin, tapered end—that’s where you’ll start.
DO NOT remove all the adhesive backing at once! You’ll peel it little by little as you wrap.

Step 3: Start Wrapping at the Knob

✅ Hold the bat so the knob is facing up.
✅ Stick the tapered end of the grip just above the knob.
✅ Start wrapping the grip around the handle, going upward in a spiral.
✅Overlap each wrap by about ⅛ of an inch so there are no gaps!

💡 Pro Tip: Pull the grip very tight while you wrap.

Step 4: Keep Wrapping Until You Reach the Top

✅ Keep pulling the backing off as you wrap up the handle.
✅ Make sure the grip stays tight and smooth—no bumps!
✅ Stop wrapping about 1 inch past where your top hand grips the bat.

💡 If you run out of grip early, no worries! Just stop and move to the next step.

Step 5: Secure the Grip with Ballpark Elite Finishing Tape

🚨 DO NOT throw away the Ballpark Elite finishing tape! You’ll need it to lock the grip in place.

✅ Take the black finishing tape that came with your grip.
✅ Wrap it around the top of the grip to hold it in place. Overlap half the tape on the grip, half on the bat.
✅ Press it down firmly so it sticks well.
